Prepare Instead of Repair

There’s a misconception that what counselors do is give advice. We don’t. Well, not always, and I’m going to break that rule right now. If there was one piece of advice I would be willing to give is Invest in Premarital Counseling. According to Scott Braithwaite at BYU..

“Premarital counseling is a great way for people to do their homework about the most important decision they are ever going to make so that they can go into it armed with skills that are going to be very helpful.” Braithwaite also points to research studies that demonstrate premarital counseling reduces the likelihood of divorce by up to 50%. 

Don’t get me wrong, I love working with married couples, but I would so much prefer to help couples prepare for the most significant relationship, presumably, they’re ever going to have.

How I Help

As a Prepare/Enrich facilitator, I work through an assessment process which highlights your strengths and weaknesses as a couple. Then we develop a personalized action plan to address potential ‘trouble spots.’ 6 to 8 sessions is standard, but I’ve found couples will book a few additional sessions for some added peace of mind or to cover additional material. 

A premarital counseling package is a great way to organize your process, and provide an opportunity for parents and family to give the gift a better marriage.
